Can metabolic syndrome be addressed by surgery?

Patients suffering from metabolic syndrome usually turn to drugs. Only in extreme cases when these fail would the patient consider surgery as a last resort. Indeed, the commonly used GI procedures have a very dramatic effect on lifestyle (severely limiting food intake) and in many cases are irreversible.

However, the DIAMOND treatment is a different kind of surgery. First, it is minimally invasive and reversible, with a very quick recovery (patients are typically back to normal the day after the procedure). Secondly, it doesn’t change the way the body works, it just enhances its natural response to meals, so that without any coercion, the patient feels satisfied sooner and eats less. Thirdly, it imposes no constraints on the post-operative diet. You can still eat anything you want and quantities are not limited. DIAMOND has been shown in clinical trials to improve many metabolic parameters associated with diabetes including blood sugar levels, lipids, liver enzymes, blood pressure and of course weight.
